CAUSES OF PREDIABETES

‘Pre’ means before. Prediabetes is thus considered a ‘pre-diagnosis’ or a warning sign of development of diabetes. It is known to occur when your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than the normal, but it’s not high enough to be considered as diabetes. 1

Thus, prediabetes is also an indication that you could soon develop type 2 diabetes if you don’t make healthy lifestyle changes. 1

LET US UNDERSTAND THE CAUSES OF PREDIABETES

The exact cause of prediabetes is still unknown. However, the following factors have been shown to play an important role in the development of prediabetes 2:

  • Genetics

  • Family history of diabetes mellitus

  • Sedentary life (Physical inactivity)

  • Excess fat, especially in the abdominal area

However, in case of prediabetes, this process begins to work inappropriately. Instead of fueling the body cells, sugar continues to build up in the bloodstream. Consequently, high blood sugar occurs when the pancreas fails to make enough insulin or the body cells become resistant to the action of insulin or both causes take place simultaneously. 2
